Veronicas

Veronicas (Speedwell) are available in forms growing only to one inch in height all the way up to the variety aptly named Blue Giant with purple-blue flower spikes to three to four feet.

Be sure to try one or more of the Speedwells for ground cover duties in full sun to partial shade.

Some of the clearest true blues in the entire plant kingdom are proudly displayed by the Speedwells.

Of course other colors are available such as:

  • purple-blue
  • dark blue-purple
  • cobalt blue
  • dark lavender
  • dark purple
  • lavender-pink
  • pink
  • violet blue
  • blue with white eyes
  • rose and white

These beauties perform well in cold hardiness zones 3 to 5 and sport foliage on certain varieties from

  • Golden-green
  • Reddish-green
  • Emerald
  • Golden
  • White and Green Variegated
  • to Silvery-Gray.

Well over thirty five years ago Harlan Hamernik and I visited with a long time perennial grower in Lincoln, Nebraska and for some reason he got on to the subject of how lavender flowers were totally mislabeled as blue in the horticulture field.

The older gentleman then went on to call this process taking the liberty of “Nurseryman’s Blues.”

In other words the nursery industry was desperate for true blue flowers and with the Speedwells you will discover that the ones listed as blue are truly just that – BLUE.
