Thymus

Thymus (Thyme) has long been a favorite of mine when used as a ground cover in shady environments.

It’s great when used to cover sizeable bed areas.

Or my truly favorite way of incorporating it into the landscape is to plant it in between stepping stones thus as yourThymus praecox 'Coccineus' shoes brush against the Thyme it releases an almost intoxicating fragrance.

The following selections are the best varieties available and if proper cultural practices are followed they will do well in your various landscape projects.

Without a doubt the most often used variety is Serpyllum (Mother of Thyme) and is considered by perennial experts as a major landscape plant.

In eastern Oklahoma, I have found that Serpyllum will not only survive but thrive when planted in exposures that offer up to half a day of sun.

However, I would never use it planted next to an extra hot environment as that offered by concrete that is located in the sun.

Here are some of the best varieties of Thymus available.

VARIETY FOLIAGE FLOWER H X W ZONE
Wooly Thyme Wooly-Gray Purple 12” X 12” 5
Serpyllum Green Pink 1-3” X 3-12” 4
Doretta Klaber Green Lavender 2” X 12” 4
Magic Carpet Green Carmine-Pink 2” X 12” 4
