Do have your soil tested and what you want in most cases is a neutral ph which is close to 6.5. Do add the various nutrients as directed by the soil testing laboratory.
Treat all unwanted vegetation with Round Up and when all plant material is dead simply rake it off in order to clear the bed.
Turn the soil to a depth of eight to ten inches using a shovel or make it easy on yourself and use a rototiller.
Spread four to six inches of compost on the surface along with the various recommendations as mentioned on your soil test report and till the soil again.
The various bulbs will all probably have different planting depths and spacing requirements so be sure to check planting instructions and follow them as close as possible.
Upon completion water in thoroughly and maintain the bed in a moist but not soggy condition.
You should now be well on your way towards enjoyment of the various forms and colors that bulbs offer.
