Shade Bulbs

Look no farther for shade bulbs that are great performers in the shade garden than Fancy Leaf Caladiums.

Numerous colors are available such as:

  • White
  • Pink
  • Red
  • Green
  • and Lime.

Most varieties have variegated foliage featuring several different colors rather than one solid color.

Fancy Leaf Caladium

I like the white forms for planting in the shade and thus use them in the spring when all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.

Plant Caladiums too early in cold soil and they will rot so early season planting, in most parts of the country is not advisable.

Normally I till the soil to a depth of six to eight inches.

During this step I apply a liberal amount of a good organic fertilizer in granular form.

Place the bulbs about five to six inches apart and don’t be concerned about placing the eyes up as they will grow if you place them in any possible position.

Cover with several inches of soil, water the new plantings evenly and you are well on your way to success.

Over the years the number two grade or size bulb proves to be far less expensive for mass planting than choosing number ones or jumbos.
