Sanguinaria canadensis is also known as Bloodroot, Bloodwort, Red Puccoon and by several other common names.
This particular perennial herbaceous flowering plant is native to eastern North America and can be quite interesting especially when used in a woodland landscape setting.
This choice native grows 6 to 12 inches in height with waxy, white flowers in early spring but count on it going dormant during the summer.
It is hardy from zone 4 all the way down the east coast to Florida and plan on it doing well in full sun or partial shade.
Bloodroot has been used as a dye and for an herbal remedy with the common name coming from the reddish sap which is visible when the roots are severed.
If deer are a problem in your area please be advised that they find it tasty during early spring.
Liquid Fence can be used as an effective deterrent to prevent deer from grazing on Bloodroot.
