Poppies

Oriental Poppies (Papaver orientale) are among the most beautiful ornamental perennials available today.

Orientals are difficult if not impossible to grow in the south but you should consider giving them a try just in case you are able to find a micro climate on your property that would make them happy.

I found out many years ago that they do the best from zone 6 on north into zone 3 where they are not stressed by the heat and where cooler evenings are the rule.

Vigorous plants reach heights of sixteen to forty eight inches and flowers of six inches in diameter are not at all uncommon.

Make your selections from the following colors:

  • scarlet
  • red
  • salmon
  • soft pink
  • redish-purple
  • orange-scarlet
  • white

They like full sun and plan on having numerous blooms to use as cuts.
