Overseeding Existing Lawns
We are going to explain new turf seeding and overseeding existing lawns using Turf2Max Liquid Aerator. The lawn in this picture was brown stubble just five weeks prior to the shooting of this picture, (Picture date 10-14-2008), and has been mowed two times. Was this turf area installed using sod? Absolutely NO! This area was seeded and the following explains the techniques employed to arrive at this quality thick stand. PROBLEM: This part of my lawn had become populated with wild strawberries along with potentilla which developed into a rather unsightly mess. FIRST STEP: Several applications of Round-Up were applied during August thus killing all plant material. SECOND STEP: On September ninth a high quality blend of perennial rye was broadcast directly into the brown stubble without breaking the surface of the soil by roto-tilling. Breaking the soils surface simply brings huge numbers of weed seed to the surface where they would germinate and compete with the desirable grass. THIRD STEP: An application of organic fertilizer was applied as a starter nutrient base for the new grass. FOURTH STEP: The final procedure was to use a treatment of Turf2Max that breaks the surface crust and allows for rapid and deep root development. Turf2Max has additional benefits such as improved drainage while allowing more moisture to be available in the root zone while increasing nutrient availability. After checking numerous lawns in zone 6b over the past fifteen years I have discovered that a good blend of perennial rye grass performs better with far fewer problems than the widely used fescues. For example fungus or melting out is almost non-existent with the rye showing great winter color and hardiness.
