Ornamental Grass

During the past decade ornamental grass has reached a high level of popularity and rightly so.

You will be able to choose from both annual and perennial grasses with the decorative grasses being the most sought after.

The various grasses offer both a texture and shape that is not available in another plant form.

When searching for decorative grasses please keep in mind that the tiny plant in the one gallon container may reach a mature height of well over two yards or may never grow any taller than a few inches.

Consider designing at least one bed featuring some of the various grasses including tall, medium and dwarf grasses.

Please don’t limit yourself to just one color as you will be able to find gold, green, red, blue and various variegations available.

Some of the switchgrass or Panicum cultivars are among the finest available and we certainly will discuss some of these.

Fountain grasses (Pennisetum) have been used for a long time and again here is one of the best garden grasses.

How long have various fountain grasses been used as landscaping material? An honest answer is I simply do not know but can tell you that they were being used my first year in horticulture which was 1962.

Many plants native to one’s own state are growing in use and this is true in the increased selections one will find on the market place featuring both native grasses and numerous grassland plants.

Native plants tend to require less water and care and most of us with limited time and in some cases being encumbered by short water supplies will find these features quite attractive.
