Number of Plants Needed per Square Foot

One of the biggest challenges when designing a flower garden is to determine how many plants will be needed, and particularly when the plants vary in widths.

Plant Spacing

This chart should prevent the gardener from over crowding or leaving too much space between the plants. Neither situation is desirable.

The following table will help you determine the total number of plants needed within a given area.

  • On 6” centers – plants per square foot = 4
  • On 8” centers – plants per square foot = 2.25
  • On 9” centers – plants per square foot = 1.77
  • On 10” centers – plants per square foot = 1.44
  • On 12” centers – plants per square foot = 1
  • On 18” centers – plants per square foot = .44
  • On 24” centers – plants per square foot = .25
