Mondo Grass
Ophiopogon (Lilyturf, Mondo Grass) varieties are actually members of the Lily family but have fooled many gardeners as they resemble grass. Selections can be made from family members growing from 2” to 12” in height. Lilyturf is commonly used as an edging plant but I prefer to find more creative uses for it in rock or alpine gardens and of course as a ground cover. Best possible exposures for you to offer it are full sun to partial shade.
Possibly the most exciting Mondo is the rather new black introduction. In my opinion it is beautiful especially when used to contrast with lighter foliaged plants. Also consider using it in containers mixed with annuals. The following four varieties have a proven garden history. | VARIETY | FOLIAGE | FLOWER | H X W | ZONE | | j.Pygmaeus | Green | None | 2-3” X 6” | 5 | | Silver Dragon | White & Green | None | 1’ X 1” | 6 | | j. Sparkler | Deep Green | White | 5-6” X 8” | 5 | | p. Niger | Black – Dark Purple | Lilac-Pink | 6” X 8” | 5 |
Now is the time for you to start growing members of this family in your landscape.
