Liriope

Liriope spicata

Liriope (Lilyturf) is a member of the Lily family that is vastly and I shall repeat VASTLY overused as a border plant.

Some landscape designers have found themselves in the habit of ringing landscape beds with this super plant.

Super that is when it’s not used in a mind numbing boring fashion.

Consider using it to contrast in form and texture with other plant material.

Perhaps best of all, consider establishing it as a fantastic trouble free ground cover in full sun to partial and full shade locations.

I appreciate the fact that many members of this plant group remain green during the winter months or at least have proven their ability to do so as far north as zone 6B.

Liriope should always have the tops cut off down to about three inches above the ground.

A time saving way to do this is to use your lawn mower with the bag attached and simply mow it back just as you would your lawn.

Choose from the following four varieties for excellent results.

VARIETY FOLIAGE FLOWER H X W ZONE
Muscari Green Purple 12-18” X 12-18” 5
Big Blue Green Dark Violet 18” X 12” 5
Variegata Green & Yellow Violet 1’ X 1’ 6
Spicata Green Lavender 10-12” X 12” 4

Let us hear back from you for any new and special uses that you have developed for this family of plants.
