Lambs Ear

Stachys lanata 'Lamb's Ear'

Lambs Ear (Stachys lanata) is an excellent drought resistant ground cover that I planted over a decade ago in an area that we give almost no care to.

Other than giving it enough moisture for its original establishment it has received no additional care since that time.

Various selections of Stachys are cold hardy well into zones 4 through 6 and have proven to be heat tolerant as well.

Most varieties mature somewhere between six to twenty inches in height with foliage colors of green to silvery-gray and white.

Stachys is not known so much for a floral display as its highly desirable leaves and over all effect in the landscape.

Never the less blossoms are evident on some forms of this plant and their colors can be observed in shades of deep pink, purple-rose and coral.
