This section on grassland plants certainly overlaps into another section titled native grasses so we will repeat that information here.
The United States was once covered with millions upon millions of acres of native grasses that reached heights from only a few inches to over several yards.
As our country was settled the plow began to clear these natural stands of grassland plants in the name of agriculture and today we continue to infringe on what little remains to develop housing additions, shopping centers and other so called improvements.
Some outstanding grasslands still remain and if you have not had the pleasure of visiting, for example, a Tallgrass prairie then I would suggest that you take the time to see what America once so proudly displayed.
Untouched native stands are still available for one to view in a number of states with excellent examples coming to mind in Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska.

Consider planting some choice native grass varieties in your landscape and enjoy their unique beauty and simple care requirements.
As many of you know wildflowers do make up an important part of the grassland so we hope that you will find the following listing of natives useful.
Please be advised that the following will also contain woody natives and vines and therefore some would probably not be present in a natural grassland. However that’s not to say that certain species could not be found along streams or perhaps even in islands within a grassland.
