Thinking about installing a water garden? No doubt about the beauty and interest that a well designed pool can add to the landscape, however, if proper garden pond maintenance is not carried out, it can rapidly become a major eyesore in a hurry.
So ask yourself if you will be in a position to dedicate several hours weekly to this one feature. If your answer is no, then we would suggest that you shelf this project until you can work these hours into your schedule during spring, summer, and fall.
If you add all of the bells and whistles to your pond such as a properly sized pump, filter, leaf skimmer, UV light , plus various additives, then there will actually be less required from you.
All water gardens do need a complete cleaning from top to bottom once a year. We suggest that you perform this maintenance procedure in the early spring.
Be sure to use a fish and plant safe oxygen cleaner on all of the gardens features. This type of cleansing aid all but eliminates the need of scrubbing.
Check pH levels on a regular basis during the morning hours as the levels will rise as the day progresses. Add the various required components in order to maintain the proper pH.
Do not use algaecides as they will also harm your valuable plants but instead use flocculants along with good filtration to reduce the algae problem.
Use water garden plants in quantities large enough that their foliage covers seventy to eighty percent of the waters surface.
Don’t let the required maintenance scare you away from this enjoyable and rewarding hobby.
