Evergreen Landscaping

Evergreen landscaping when properly incorporated into a design and theme offers more visual impact than other forms of plant material that simply goes dormant during the late fall and winter months.

Often I have noticed the improper use of deciduous plants inserted into key areas of what otherwise would have been considered tasteful landscaping.

If we insist on the traditional concept of decorating the foundation of our home then I can not imagine using any form of plant material that fails to display evergreen foliage throughout the year.

Evergreen Landscaping

Please be mindful that there are many species of evergreens available in a rainbow of colors and textures.

For example one may consider the use of cultivars with gold, blue, blue-green, red, purple and numerous shades of green foliage.

Textures available at nurseries are varied and attractive in needle, feathery spray or broadleaf forms.

Depending on where you live, in relation to your cold and heat hardiness zones, your choices could also include certain varieties of grass or grass like plants that retain excellent color all year.

Consider making your selections from some of the following species.

Needle foliaged evergreens:

  • Pine
  • Spruce
  • Fir
  • YewCedar (Some forms)

Feathery spray foliage:

  • Arborvitae
  • Chamaecyparis
  • Cedar (Some forms)
  • Juniper

Broadleaf foliage:

  • Holly
  • Euonymus
  • Photinia
  • Ligustrum
  • Viburnum
  • Abelia
  • Palms
  • Elaeagnus
