Container gardening has been around in one form or another for perhaps as long as conventional tilling of the soil.
When I was growing up most of the garden containers being used were red clay pots which still have a loyal and faithful following.
Times have changed and we now have a large selection of containers or troughs which are manufactured from a broad range of materials and are available in a wide array of shapes, colors and sizes.
Some of the best perennials that can be used as trough or Container plants can be found by clicking on our list of favorites as found in the Rock Gardens theme under the heading of Rock Garden Plants.
Please try some of the plants on our list but do not limit yourself to using only perennials as there are many annuals, biennials and even woody ornamentals that do and will thrive when planted in troughs or containers.
*You will find helpful instructions detailing how you can construct a trough garden in the section entitled garden containers along with other useful tips.
Last but not least visit our link container water garden for ways to fully enjoy this rather new form of water gardening.
In all honesty container water gardening is actually quite old but only recently has been reintroduced.
