Container Gardening Tips

We will provide you with several, what we hope you will find to be, good container gardening tips.

When selecting the containers of your choice be sure to acquire ones that are considerably larger than what you think is required for your project. Remember pots, urns and planter boxes always appear larger in the store than when you view them on your property.

The larger the soil volume the less frequently you will have to water them. I like to select sizes large enough to go several days without watering which is just in case we are called out of town.

A little trick that I learned many years ago is to add a granular polymer to the soil that holds a great deal of moisture and releases it as the plants require it.

Never, never, never did I say never use garden soil in your containers. Garden soil is not very adept at holding moisture, tends to become compacted and you may introduce, insects, disease and weeds to the potted gardens.

Always use an artificial soil or soilless media which is usually a combination of Canadian peat moss, perhaps composted pine bark along with pearlite and the better brands may have added both nutrients and granular polymer.

Be sure that your plant selections include only the cultivars that will thrive in the exposure locations that you have chosen. Or we could say to pick only sun lovers for bright areas and in the shade be sure to choose plants that have low light requirements.
