So you have decided to build a water garden either using your own design or one that was created for you by your landscape designer or consultant.
A well thought out water garden concept adds enormously to the landscape theme and perhaps more so than any other addition could.
While still in the planning stage be sure that you will be able to dedicate at least two hours weekly towards the maintenance of your proposed garden.
Without the required care a water feature will soon become a liability rather than an asset.
Another excellent approach towards proper care is to hire a professional that is experienced in this field which solves the problem and also allows you more time to simply enjoy your unique landscape environment.
During the planning stage be sure to layout the ponds basic shape using a garden hose.
Simply form the shape and size of the pool with the flexible water hose on the ground.
While you are at it form the shape of the waterfalls, stream and bog garden if they are part of your concept.
For layout purposes you can also use the little flags on fifteen to eighteen inch wire stakes that are available at most sprinkling system supply centers.
Once satisfied with both the shape and location of your new garden it is time to start the excavation process.
Over to the side of the pool and well outside of any area that you will be digging in is where you will be storing all of what appears to be excess soil.
All of the stored soil will be used in the creation of a berm which will be located along the sides and back of your garden pond.
The berm is also where you will probably locate your waterfall as the extra height will allow for more white water sound that will tend to screen out unwanted noise from traffic and other undesirable sources.
