Bee Balm

Every time I see or hear the name of this plant it’s impossible for me not to be reminded of a song that I first heard in the early 1950's.

Sounds corny now which it is by today’s standards but it was amusing back then during those simple years.

The botanical name is Monarda and is an herb with a desirable fragrance that flowers in various shades of

Monarda 'Prairie Gypsy'

  • pink
  • crimson
  • scarlet
  • red
  • reddish-brown
  • salmon
  • lavender rose
  • raspberry pink
  • to white

Mature plants vary in height from twelve inches to as much as five feet.

To purchase these plants click here.

I have found that most varieties above eighteen inches are better staked than allowing them to sprawl as the appearance is considerably neater and prevents interference with other plants.

Plant this herb in full sun to partial shade and enjoy viewing the butterflies and hummingbirds that will be visiting your garden.

You will also want to harvest bouquets from whatever variety or varieties of Monarda that you plant.
